ToggleAre the Timlalin Dunes worth visiting?
There are few landscapes which captivated me as the Timallin Dunes did. Even worldwide, I am doubtful if there are more than 5 similar shows comparable to the one you can witness in Timlalin. It is simply a breathtaking place where the sea meets the sand dunes and sharp cliffs.
If you are a nature lover seeking one of the most wonderful views in Morocco for an afternoon or evening, you are at the right place. Within my travel itinerary in Morocco, it is a memorable moment, and you should also give it a go.

When to visit the Timlalin Dunes?
Located on the Atlantic coast, the Timlalin Dunes are a dry and sandy place but still windy. To fully enjoy its potential, you should avoid going there from May to August. The intense heat and even the ocean breeze will not be enough to cool you down.
The best months to visit this place are October to April. The weather is mild, and the days are long enough to fully explore the surroundings without dying from the drying sun.

How to get to the Timlalin Dunes?
The Timlalin Dunes are located 70 kilometres from Agadir on the side of the National Road 1. It is not an easy place to reach as the buses are rare and taxi rides will cost you a fortune. However, the bus to Imsouane passes by, so you can ask the driver to get out at your desired destination.
If not, if you know How to hitchhike, this is a feasible option I have personally done, and it went well. Overall, having a car is the easiest option, and you can park around the entrance for free.

What to do in the Timlalin Dunes?
Touristy Activities
Once at the Timlalin Dunes, you will find some guys at the entrance who might offer you activities. You could go for a quad or camel ride with a tour guide, but this is not something I will recommend as it goes far away from my travel values.
However, one of the cool things to do, either by yourself or with a group tour, is to ride the sand dunes on a snowboard. It seems to be a great experience (I haven’t done it either) in a wonderful place. From what I’ve seen online, the rate begins from 10 euros an hour.

Be a Slow Traveller
But, if you are a fellow Slow Traveller, I have more advice for you. The best part of Timlalin is to hike around, considering it a giant playground and uncharted territory to explore. During a few hours, say my experience below, I walked on the dunes, giving me the impression of being in a desert although I was still close to the entrance.
After a 20-minute walk, I was completely alone, far away from the tourist groups, and it felt amazing. I have witnessed landscapes I never thought I could see near Tamraght. Doing so, I felt like a real explorer without damaging the beauty of my surroundings.
You have no chance to lose yourself in the dunes. Pack 2 litres of water and protect yourself from the sun with adequate equipment. Then, enjoy the magic of the Timlalin Dunes, one of the best Destinations in Morocco.

My own experience
Discovering the beauty
As soon as I passed the entrance of the Timlalin Dunes, I knew it was about to be a special moment. An infinite amount of sand was spreading in front of me, the Atlantic being the only limit. I start walking, adjusting my Cheche around my face to protect against the sun and furious wind.
Each of my steps slightly sank into the ground, but not enough to be a burden. I pass by tourist groups gathering at the footstep of a dune, some quad biking with guided tours, others sandboarding. I will pass for extra activity, my current desire is to get isolated and immerse in nature.

Feeling like an explorer
After 20 minutes, I am completely alone, walking on the edge of sand dunes and being astonished by the landscapes. I have the impression of being an alone explorer in the Sahara, looking for an ancient route. Around me, the wind draws intriguing patterns on the sand, the dunes go down until the Ocean, where waves and cliffs face each other in an eternal fight. It is magical.
Following the cliff, I stumble on a mysterious place. Above the sand, a shell layer is 200 metres above sea level. Curious, I keep walking until I reach a hidden bay with houses slotted in the rocks. A group of Fishermen are down there, and I will later learn about their lifestyle for a part of the year, living in these isolated and humble shelters, passing their whole days to traditional fish.
Coming back to the entrance as my water supply runs down, I am grateful for this moment. I feel no one goes to explore this part of the Timlalin Dunes, sticking to the activities and initial area. It is now time to go back to another Moroccan hidden gem: Tamraght, my place of stay, after this ideal day. The sand dunes and landscapes engraved in my mind forever.
