There are two main ways to reach Morocco without flying, starting with a visit to France. Imagine exploring the most beautiful country even before reaching your desired destination.

Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?

You have two options to take the ferry, either from Sète or Marseille. Each of these cities is worth exploring if your schedule allows it. From Sète, you can choose between three landing points: Nador, Al Hoceïma, and Tanger MED.
From Marseille, you will always land in Tanger MED. The crossing takes around 40 hours and costs about 100 euros.

You have two options to take the ferry, either from Sète or Marseille. Each of these cities is worth exploring if your schedule allows it.

Here, you’ll experience minimal street harassment and be completely immersed in authentic Moroccan culture that hasn’t evolved solely to please tourists, unlike some other cities.

There are several hostels and riads where you can stay. My girlfriend and I stayed at Dar Khatib for four days, a lovely property managed by a local family with breathtaking interior design. However, the real magic happens outside. Tetouan is full of hidden gems, and treasures to explore, along with fantastic people to meet.

Although its Instagram fame (beurk) might repulse some, the Medina offers a unique charm worth exploring for an afternoon (phew). The blue-painted buildings create a distinctive atmosphere, even if some decorations feel a bit staged. Also, for a more peaceful experience, venture to the less crowded neighbourhoods, avoiding the busy area near the river where most restaurants are.

Their joyful presence is contagious, making it a perfect spot to relax, especially if you get caught in a rain shower as we did.

We ended up staying there for more than an hour. Furthermore, as destiny is playful, this is where I met the woman who gave me the idea to go to Figuig, the hidden Moroccan gem.

Initially suspicious of any hidden costs, we soon realised he just wanted to share the moment. Lightened by this news, we ended up enjoying a beautiful sunset together while listening to his tales of how Chefchaouen has changed over the years, including the story behind its famous blue colour.

I tried to find it for hours before finally encountering its location here. Simply put, this place is one of the best affordable, tasty, and local addresses to eat in Tangier. Their Harira Soup is a must-try!

Buy Honey at Honey’s House

I met Sofiane, the owner of Honey’s House, by chance while wandering through Tangier. After a fun language exchange, I tried his honey and was blown away, especially by the lemon variety. His family produces it sustainably around Agadir, and it’s very affordable. Thus, go there and mention you came through my recommendation for a special treat!

My initial venture into Medina happened around 6 PM, and it quickly became clear why some people feel overwhelmed. The Medina is enormous!
With over 9,000 streets and alleys, its labyrinthine architecture is unlike anything in Europe. The sheer size combined with many dark, seemingly deserted areas can feel intimidating.

Despite its daunting appearance, I never encountered any trouble wandering through Fes, nor did any other travellers I met.

But, be wary of people offering to guide you to “better” itineraries. It is one of the biggest scams in Morocco to avoid, and I can only encourage you to read in-depth so you can save some coins.

Why Ouarzazate?

Initially, Ouarzazate was just a stopover for me on the way to the coast. However, I quickly realised it deserved much more attention. Often overlooked by travellers, Ouarzazate is a hidden gem in many slow travel itineraries in Morocco. Here’s why:

The People
Far from being a bustling city, Ouarzazate offers a peaceful experience with minimal harassment. The locals are generally kind and do not see you as just another walking wallet. I met many locals there, who gave me insights, taught me about history, and even showed me how they cooked the ash bread in the Medina.

The Cinema Culture
Though the local cinema museums may not be impressive, Ouarzazate has a rich cinematic history. Manyyyyyyy films have been recorded here or nearby. For instance, you can visit the famous gas station set from “The Hills Have Eyes” as a testament to this legacy.
Interestingly, despite this strong connection to the film industry, Ouarzazate didn’t have a movie theatre until recently.

The Surroundings
The area around Ouarzazate offers stunning and diverse landscapes, small oases, and charming villages. Most destinations are accessible via collective taxis, so there is no need to rent a car.

Ouarzazate is a great place to dive into Moroccan culture. Participate in traditional music and dance performances, often organised by local cultural centres. Engage with locals and learn about their customs and traditions. Consider arranging a stay with a local family to experience their hospitality and daily routines firsthand.

Discover Surrounding Villages
The villages around Ouarzazate, such as Ait Ben Haddou and Skoura, offer unique experiences. Ait Ben Haddou, another UNESCO World Heritage site, is a stunning example of traditional Moroccan earthen architecture, although it has started to be consumed by mass tourism.
Skoura, known for its palm grove, provides a lush contrast to the surrounding desert.

Learn to Cook Moroccan Food
Many local establishments and cooking schools offer cooking classes where you can learn to prepare traditional Moroccan dishes. From tagines to couscous, these hands-on classes often include a trip to the local market to select fresh ingredients.

Enjoy a Traditional Hammam
Once again, this is the ultimate relaxation. These public baths are a cornerstone of Moroccan culture, offering a unique way to relax and learn.
