3-4 Weeks Morocco Travel Itinerary: A Slow Adventure

3-Week Itinerary in Morocco

1/ Arriving in Tangier (3-5 Days)

Where to stay in Tangier: Bayt Alice hostel

If you went down to Spain, you probably arrived in Tangier. From there will be the starting point of our Morocco travel itinerary. This historical city deserves at least 3 days to fully understand its potential. Without a doubt, it was one of my favourite destinations in Morocco.

Overflowing with incredible histories and legends, and emblematic people of Morocco, Tangier offers the perfect starting point to your journey.

Locals are a library of knowledge and are eager to share it with any curious adventurers approaching them respectfully. To find the best accommodation, understand the culture and traditions around you, and try the best non-touristy restaurants, I advise you to check out Why Tangier is Worth visiting.

But, I will still give you a few highlights of Tangier:

  • Café Hafa
  • Explore Ibn Battuta’s History
  • Wander Along the Fortification

2/ Head to the Underrated Tetouan (2 days)

How to go from Tangier to Tetouan: (1 hours 20 min) Collective Taxi – 50 MAD

Where to stay in Tetouan: Dar Khatib

If you’ve been following our previous tips about How to move in Morocco, you already know that collective taxis are often the best deal. You’ll find them near the train station, easy peasy!

There are several hostels and riads where you can stay in Tetouan. My girlfriend and I stayed at Dar Khatib for four days, a lovely property managed by a local family with breathtaking interior design. But why should you visit Tetouan? No guides or itineraries talk about it, and that’s precisely why you should go!

In this Morocco trip itinerary, it is one of the best places to understand the traditional Moroccan culture. The Medina is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is truly unique.

Here, you’ll experience minimal street harassment and immerse yourself in authentic traditions and lifestyles that haven’t evolved solely to please tourists, unlike some other cities. To fully enjoy this unique destination, I crafted an article about how to spend 24 hours in Tetouan. Don’t pass on it!

3/ Explore The Blue City of ChefChaouen (2-4 days)

How to go from Tétouan to Chefchaouen: (1 hour 20 min) by collective taxi 70 MAD

Where to stay in ChefChaouen: No recommendations. The place I was staying wasn’t good (Aline Hostel)

Most travellers have heard about ChefChaouen, but only a few have explored it beyond the main tourist attractions. For sure, the whole blue atmosphere is beautiful but that’s just before you understand the sad truth behind the Blue City of ChefChaouen

However, there is always a way to avoid tourist traps and catch a glimpse of what this place has to offer. Its unique location surrounded by mountains gives a great playground, and even the most touristic spots hide something worth to be found in this Morocco travel itinerary.

Between wandering in the Medina, understanding the origin of the blue colour, hiking the mountains, swimming in the cold river, and engaging with locals, Chefchaouen might spark your interest. Check out What to see in ChefChaouen and explore this destination like a local.

4/ The magic of Fes (3-5 days)

How to go from ChefChaouen to Fès: (4 hours 30) by bus CTM: 130 MAD

How to go from Tangier to Fès: (4 hours) ONCF train – 100-170 MAD

Where to stay in Fès: Moroccan Dream Hostel

For the Medina life, Fes offers a unique and unmatched atmosphere. Upon arrival, I heard numerous warnings about its intensity, and people talking about the overwhelming experiences they had there. However, compared to Tangier or Chefchaouen, I didn’t find the level of harassment particularly higher.

The overall experience was something incredible I had to display in this Morocco travel itinerary. Besides the stereotypes, the city of Fes is considered by many as the cultural and spiritual capital of Morocco. You will find a diversity of craftsmen, history, and traditions in this unmissable Fes Itinerary.

But, although I never encountered any trouble wandering through Fes and its old city, nor did any other travellers I met, you should be aware of something. The city is a nest of the biggest scams in Morocco to avoid, and I can only encourage you to read in-depth so you can save some coins.

5/ The ancient Meknes (1-2 days)

Fes – Meknes (40 min) – Train ONCF – 40 MAD

Where to stay in Meknes: Dar Merzouga Meknes

I arrived in the ancient imperial city of Meknes without expectations. From my experience, that’s usually a good sign. Located near Fes, there is nothing similar between those two. Meanwhile, Fes is almost constantly boiling, and Meknes feels like a fresh and calm place.

Meknes was once built to impress the world. Sultan Moulay Ismail ruled with force, ambition, and grandeur, and wanted a city representing these. Although this imperial power is gone, Meknes is still very lively.

Wandering around is always the best thing to do, and between the children playing football nearby, the men sipping mint tea, and the women laughing, it almost feels like a small village. You can wander for hours without being followed or sold to.

Here is a quick recap of the things I really enjoyed in Meknes:

  • The Impressive Bab El Mansour Laalej Gate
  • The Old Medina
  • Taking a day trip to the Volubilis Ruins
  • Chill at the Ladhim Square
  • Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail
  • Dar Jamai Museum

6/ Rabat: The political centre of Morocco (3-4 days)

Fes – Rabat (3 hours) Bus CTM – 85 MAD
Fès – Rabat (3 hours) Train ONCF -125 MAD

Where to stay in Rabat: Dar Oussama

The city of Rabat offers a real contrast to anything you have seen before in this 21-day Morocco itinerary. The political centre of Morocco might be the most modern place in the whole country. Yet, it stays beautiful and worth exploring.

Rabat is full of history, and there is even a beautiful sandy beach with good waves for surf lovers. The city perfectly balances buzz and peace, modern and traditional, local and tourist-friendly. This diversity is maybe why I loved Rabat.

During my stay in Rabat, I had the opportunity to uncover some hidden gems guided by locals, and the city was full of surprises. Here is a small selection of the things I loved in Rabat during my Morocco trip itinerary:

  • Explore Kasbah des Oudayas at sunrise or sunset
  • The Chellas necropolis
  • Mohamed V mausoleum
  • Sip a mint tea at café Maure
  • Eat a tagine at Dar Naji
  • Witness the stunning Grand Teatre
  • Do a walking tour to understand the city’s history
  • Take a rowing boat from Rabat to salé

4 Week Itinerary in Morocco

If you have close to one month in Morocco, the itinerary above can be slightly modified, allowing you to see more interesting places. This new Morocco travel route brings us down south to Ouarzazate after Fès and Meknes.

This requires taking a bus for an extended time period, but the rewards easily outweigh it. In this one-month itinerary in Morocco, you will dive into off-the-beaten-path destinations and hidden gems. Ready?

6/ The unexpected Ouarzazate (3-5 days)

How to go from Marrakech to Ouarzazate: (5 hours) – Bus CTM – 100 MAD
How to go from Fès to Ouarzazate: (16 hours) – Bus CTM – 270 MAD
How to go from Figuig to Ouarzazate: (14 hours) – 3 Local Buses – 280 MAD

Bus Route: Figuig – Bouarfa, Bouarfa – Errachidia, Errachidia – Ouarzazate

Where to stay in Ouarzazate: Afgo Hostel

I planned just two days in Ouarzazate, but after 48 hours, I knew I had to stay longer. For most travellers, this city is merely a gateway to the desert, but skipping it is a mistake.

Unlike bustling cities such as Tangier or Fes, Ouarzazate stands out for its peaceful atmosphere. It offers minimal harassment and boasts many hidden gems. Locals are generally kind and do not see visitors as just another walking wallet. I met many residents who served the best mint tea, shared stories about the city’s history, and even demonstrated how they cook ash bread in the Medina.

Between the historical cinema culture, UNESCO World Heritage sites, day trip possibilities, and the city itself, you must add this place to your Morocco travel itinerary. Not convinced yet? Check out the best things to do in Ouarzazate.

Extra Destinations to Add in Your 21-30 Day Morocco Itinerary

If you happen to have extra time or want to explore less-known destinations within your 21-30-day itinerary in Morocco, I have something for you. As a slow traveller and curious backpacker, I went into places where only a few visitors go.

Most of them require a detour, but if you are looking for something off-the-beaten-path and authentic, keep reading.

The mountain village of Akchour (1-2 days)

Chefchaouen – Akchour (50 min) Local collective Taxis – 30 MAD

Where to stay in Akchour: Gîte abdo Zaouia D’Akchour

If you are in Chefchaouen, Akchour is a place worth adding to your 21-30-day itinerary in Morocco. This small mountain village is famous for its sumptuous waterfalls and rivers. However, most people arrive in Akchour with walking shoes and a return plan. They hike to the waterfalls, take a few photos, eat by the river, then leave.

There is nothing wrong with doing it if you are short on time, but I did the opposite, and it changed everything. After arriving late in the morning, I decided to stay overnight. By the end of the afternoon, the noise was gone, and most of the path was empty. What remained felt real and authentic.

I was immersed in simple village life, but I loved every second of it. The nature around is beautiful, and the sunrise is unmatched. You can dive into the cold water with locals and enjoy a tasty meal afterwards. What else do you need? There are also many trails, just ask the reception of your hostel/hotel or a local, they know better.

Adventure In Figuig (2-4 days)

Fes – Figuig (16 hours, ouch) CTM and 2 local buses – 320 MAD total

Bus Routes: Fes – Errachidia, Errachidia – Bouarfa, Bouarfa – Figuig

Where to stay in Figuig: Auberge Oasis

A 16-hour bus journey might sound long, and indeed, it is. So, why should you embark on such a long trip to Figuig? My reason was an old lady in Chefchaouen who spoke of ancient warrior civilisations and a hidden oasis. It was enough to create a spontaneous new step in my Morocco backpacking itinerary.

Yours might be curiosity, a desire to explore the unknown or discover the traditional Moroccan culture. Trust me, it is worth it, and what awaits in Figuig probably exceeds all your expectations.

Did I spark your interest? I will meet you in Figuig: Morocco’s hidden gem. But, for the lazy part of the audience, here are some highlights of What to Do in Figuig that might pique your curiosity, although they hardly capture the essence of this unique place.

  • Wander into the Palm Grove
  • Understand the bloody history and warrior heritage.
  • Embrace their unique local culture.

Practical Travel Tips for your 21-30 Day Morocco Itinerary

1/ Budget: How much does it cost?

During my 21-30 Day Itinerary in Morocco, I kept an expense record to see how much I spent throughout my journey. Although it might not be exactly accurate, depending on your travel style (mine is mostly backpacking and staying in hostels), I believe it serves as a good base.

2/ How to travel around Morocco for 3 weeks?

Travelling across Morocco is straightforward once you understand how locals move from place to place. For 3 weeks in Morocco, overland transport is the best way to connect cities, villages, and remote regions without relying on flights.
It keeps costs low, supports a slower travel rhythm, and offers a deeper look into everyday Moroccan life. The transportation system is varied and efficient, with each option serving a specific purpose depending on distance and destination.

Different options to move around Morocco

Trains are ideal for linking major cities. The national rail network is reliable, affordable, and comfortable, making it one of the easiest ways to cover long distances during an extended trip.

Buses fill the gaps where trains don’t go. They run frequently and are essential for reaching smaller towns and off-the-beaten-path areas. While journeys can be slower, they open access to places most travellers miss.

Grand taxis operate between towns and rural areas. They leave once full, follow fixed routes, and are often the fastest and cheapest option for short intercity connections.

Petit taxis are strictly for city travel. They’re easy to flag down and practical for daily movement within towns, especially when distances are too long to walk. If you want to know how to avoid being much more than what you should in petit taxis, check out this guide on the biggest Moroccan scams and how to avoid them.

This 3-week route in Morocco goes through diverse regions and landscapes. If you decide to go to Figuig and Ouarzazate, you can expect dry weather in the middle or at the Sahara gate.

The north of the country, including Tangier and Chefchaouen, is closer to Europe and the greener areas. Therefore, it can be humid and with heavy rain during the winter season. Finally, the coast offers a mild climate during most of the year, except in summer, when it can get pretty hot.

Due to all these factors, the best time to undertake this 21-30 days Morocco backpacking itinerary is from September to October or from March to May. During this time, you ensure nice weather and avoid most of the heat peaks and heavy rains. Plus, most of the crowds haven’t arrived yet or have left, leaving you with lower prices, fewer tourists, and more authenticity.

What about Marrakech or Casablanca?

I choose not to avoid these cities and not include them in this Morocco travel guide. After long talks with locals, I realised it was the right decision. Is it safe to travel to Morocco?

The most dangerous parts of Morocco are the cities. In the countryside, people are welcoming and mostly with good intentions. However, always trust your gut, as a bad situation can happen anywhere with anyone if you don’t want to end up like me in my worst encounter in Morocco.
