In the 17th Century, an Amazigh leader built the Taourirt Kasbah and Mellah. Jews soon established themselves in the Mellah, most being traders, merchants, or jewellers, and it became a must-see place in Ouarzazate.
In 1954, about 170 Jews lived in this neighbourhood next to the Kasbah, and a synagogue was even established inside its walls. Today, there are many shops to enter to buy souvenirs or Berber artefacts.
I highly recommend exploring it with an official guide to learn more about the history and the relationships between jews and Moroccan. The guide I was with told me that they were like brothers.

The entrance costs 20-30 MAD for an unlimited amount of time. My personal tip? You should buy a scratching glove and a black soap packet at the entrance for 20 MAD, essential for the whole experience.

Once again, cooking and eating are great ways to dive into local culture. You can find many local establishments and cooking schools to do so in town. Undoubtedly, it was one of my top things to do in Ouarzazate.
If you followed my recommendation on where to stay in Ouarzazate, the hostel offers a cooking class where you learn to prepare a traditional couscous from scratch, starting by buying fresh ingredients at the market.
Sharing the meal with all the participants, including local women, was a precious memory and worth every dirham spent. I remembered it as a blend of laughter, incredibly tasty food, and knowledge shared.
Furthermore, in the Mellah, there is a traditional oven where women gather almost daily to cook the ash bread for the whole village. I had the chance to spend a moment with them, and it was one of the best things I did in Ouarzazate.

Spreading over 25 square kilometres, this lush oasis offers a dramatic contrast with the arid surroundings. It used to be a crucial stop for travellers crossing the desert and has preserved a flourishing agriculture thanks to an ingenious irrigation system similar to that of Figuig.
Every visitor in Skoura must see the fabulous kasbah Amridil. It is one of the most beautiful and well-maintained kasbahs I’ve seen during my odyssey in Morocco. Then, the palm grove, listed as a UNESCO site, is also mandatory, with numerous date palm, olive, and almond trees.

How to Get to Ouarzazate?
Nestled between the Atlas Mountains, the Dra’a Valley, and the Dades Valley, Ouarzazate isn’t hard to reach. It sits close to several other Moroccan cities, and plenty of connections run between them.
However, please note that there is no train station in Ouarzazate. The only accessible means of transportation to go there are by plane, car, or bus. This being said, the closest city is Marrakech, but Agadir and Essaouira are also options.
