Beyond the incredible history, it’s an opportunity to experience a local hamman, eat your first tagine or Moroccan sweet, drink a mint tea with locals, and shop at the market in Petit Socco.

Tangier has changed a lot during the last 20 years, and therefore, a big part of the city is very modern, close to what you can find in Europe or North America. However, this shouldn’t be a downfall to visit Tangier.
If you want to explore a more historical part of town, where traditional architecture has been conserved, head to Medina and Kasbah. Over there, you wander through a maze of alleys, with smells from the kitchen and restaurant. This is one of the best things to do in Tangier and one of the reasons why Tangier is worth visiting.

I will let you make your own opinion, but some parts of Tangier were sad, without any soul or uniqueness. But the good point is that it is quite easy to spot and avoid them. Ask locals for recommendations, learn a few sentences in Darija (The Moroccan dialect), and be curious!

How to get to Tangier
From Spain
Tangier is also worth visiting because it is an easy place to reach from Spain. Nestled on the other side of the Gibraltar Strait, only 15 kilometres separates Tangier from Europe. Ferries cross this short distance in under two hours, many times a day, making it an accessible destination for everyone.
Therefore, visiting Tangier is also an opportunity to explore Tarifa and its top things to do beforehand. But, this is not the only starting point, as Algeciras is also one after you’ve explored Spain slowly and its traditions.
However, be careful! Only the ferry from Tarifa will take you directly to Tangier City, while the one from Algeciras will drop you off at Tanger MED, which makes it a bit tricky to reach Tangier afterwards. The crossing costs around 35 euros, and you should purchase your ferry ticket in advance as prices can vary significantly.
