It is crucial to choose when to visit the National Park of Souss-Massa. Not all species are present every year, and temperatures can make your day-trip pretty hard because of the scorching sun or harsh rains.

The best months to visit the park are September to May. This is when the temperatures are ideal—not too hot or cold. From June to August, you are more likely to get punished by the heat. It limits your exploration possibilities and is not the best time to visit the park.

Be aware that December is usually the wettest month in the region. Although rainfall is limited, it might restrict your exploration. The best months to spot bird species are during winter and spring, from November to April. This is when birds look for mild temperatures in the Souss-Massa region.

It’s also best to arrive early in the morning, as animals are more active than during midday. The Souss-Massa park usually opens around 10 AM, giving you time to explore before the sun reaches its peak, which can be really hot. I also recommend visiting on weekdays to avoid the weekend crowds.

Fortunately, it is not impossible, especially if you plan to visit Souss-Massa National Park for a day. Whether you want to reach the park by car or by public transportation, pay attention to what follows to not miss any crucial information.

Be aware that one of the circuits in the Rokein reserve can only be done with your own car and not on foot.

Get to the Rokein reserve

This is the closest entrance from Agadir, 15km south (30.289792, -9.561270). There is a road, accessible by most vehicles. But if you don’t have a car, you can also access it by public transport.

From the Agadir local bus station (not the CTM one), take the bus to Sidi Binzarne after you have learned how to travel in Morocco by train and bus. Then, you will have to go down around here and walk for about an hour to the entrance of the Rokein reserve.

My adventure to the Ourais Reserve began somewhat unexpectedly. Initially aiming for the Rokein reserve, a local on the bus insisted the park entrance was in Sidi Binzarne. Instead of stressing over the detour, I embraced the Slow Traveller mindset and followed his advice. Surprisingly, I found myself in a different area, but that’s part of the journey, right?

If you want to explore this entrance, you’ll have to take the same bus to the Rokein reserve: Sidi Binzarne, for a one-hour ride. But this time, wait until the terminus to step out of the bus.

Then, you can either walk the 40 minutes to the Souss-Massa National Park Ecomusée (here) or, like me, try your luck by hitchhiking (as you guessed, I’m a fan of hitchhiking and sometimes a bit lazy!).

Upon arrival in the Rokein Reserve, you will be greeted by rangers. After a quick explanation about the national park of Souss-Massa and its commitment to its preservation, you will be given two tour options to explore the Rokein reserve.

The guides offer tours in English, French, and Arabic. Unfortunately, with no car, I had to opt for the shorter hiking loop. However, I was pleasantly surprised and had a wonderful experience. The guide was so knowledgeable about the local fauna that we ended up learning much about the Souss-Massa region.

Warning: Be aware that the longer loop is accessible only with your own car. No car can be rented at the Rokein reserve. Furthermore, the trails criss-crossing the national park of Souss-Massa aren’t regular roads. Ensure your car can handle a 4×4 road type.

Entrance fees to Rokein Reserve: 70 MAD or 150 MAD

Half-Day Itinerary in Souss Massa National Park

If you are short on time, a half-day visit to the Souss Massa National Park is still enough to experience its unique wildlife and landscapes in one of the reserves. I advise going to the Rokein entrance as it offers a more memorable experience, in my opinion.

The best time to start your half-day itinerary in Souss Massa National Park is around opening time (10 AM). By arriving early at the Rokein Reserve, your chances of seeing animals increase because they are most active and temperatures remain comfortable.

Choose the 3km walking loop if you don’t have a car. This circuit already offers a great introduction to the national park of Souss Massa, allowing you to observe gazelles, ostriches, and antelopes in a semi-wild environment.

If you have a car, a ranger comes on board and gives instructions to drive in an environment where animals are free. Enjoy the moment, it’s an incredible opportunity to observe diverse African mammal species.

After 2 to 3 hours of exploration, you can head back to Agadir by early afternoon or continue your journey elsewhere. Take your time to enjoy the coastal cliffs and sandy beaches on the way back, my friend.

Be aware that this full-day itinerary in the national park of Souss-Massa is only possible if you have a car. By relying on public transportation, you probably need two days to fully complete it, and please don’t rush.

For a deeper and more immersive experience, I highly recommend spending a full day exploring both reserves of the Souss Massa National Park. Start your morning in the Rokein Reserve. If you have a car, opt for the longer 4×4 circuit to access more remote areas and increase your chances of spotting wildlife.

Around midday, head towards Arbhalou for a break. Don’t hesitate to explore the local restaurants as they serve delicious and generous portions of Moroccan meals. Then, once full and rested, make your way toward the Ourais Reserve.

In the afternoon, explore the Oued Massa river trail. This is one of the most peaceful and scenic experiences in the Souss Massa park. This area is the best spot for birdwatching. If you’re lucky, you might even see the rare northern bald ibis, one of the most iconic species of this national park in Morocco.

End your day near the ocean, taking your time to go up towards Agadir or down south to the Guelmim – Oued Noun region. Eventually, you can also stay the night near the reserved entrance at HouseBella.
