Nestled in the middle of the mountains up north Palma de Mallorca is the famous village of Valldemossa. This well-known destination on the island gets its reputation from its unique charm and style. I loved wandering between its cobblestone streets, ancient houses, and nature around. However, most Valldemossa itinerary I found online were the same. They highlight the same things to do in Valldemossa without capturing what makes this place stand out.

Come with me during the day to uncover the magic of Valldemossa and the main things to do, as well as explore its history, legends, and hidden gems. It’s all about diving passionately into every destination when crafting your Mallorca itinerary the slow traveller way. Today, it’s time to do it here and highlight the sides no one talks about regarding Valldemossa. Ready?

Although it would be a lie to affirm Valldemossa is still a hidden gem in Mallorca (Hi other bloggers 😉 when visiting correctly, every kilometre made to reach this village is worth it. It stands on a valley overhanging the sea on a corner with local life still present.

Diving into this Valldemossa itinerary is a great way to escape the city of Palma de Mallorca for a day. I don’t think the destination itself deserves more than one day in Valldemossa if your schedule is tight. However, with more free time, it is your chance to dive deeper into the local history and explore the many hikes in the surroundings, bringing you into incredible wild landscapes.

In my opinion, Valldemossa is still worth visiting.

However, it highly depends on when. I will talk more about this part in the dark side of Valldemossa section, but I think going there in the summer is pure hell and no pleasure. Now, let’s uncover the beauty of one of the typical Mallorcan village in the mountains.

The best time to visit Valldemossa

It is crucial to wisely choose your visiting time to Valldemossa. Upon this decision, the best things to do in Valldemossa could quickly become not enjoyable. Why? Flows of tourists arrive tirelessly all day long during certain periods of the year.

During Summer, from mid-May to the end of August, I will not advise you to step on the island of Mallorca. The population triples over the hottest months, provoking a different feeling when exploring its beauty.

However, Mallorca and all its treasures offer daily satisfaction when you decide to travel slowly in Spain. It includes visiting places like Valldemossa during the shoulder season, preferably from September to November and from the beginning of April until mid-May. During this time, the weather is ideal, and the crowds haven’t arrived yet. It is the perfect period to plan your Valldemossa itinerary in a slow and authentic way.

A one-day Valldemossa Itinerary

Main Things to do in Valldemossa

Below are the main things to do in Valldemossa. The whole mindset of this blog is to encourage off-the-beaten-path attractions and adventures, but I still believe must-see places are popular for a reason.

In every Slow Travel Destination, these touristy attractions contain a lot of history, legends, and beauty. All these facets are needed to understand the visited places and create a complete travel experience. Therefore, I enjoyed passing by those main attractions in Valldemossa as they were beautiful and unique.

1/ Wander around the cobblestoned streets

One of the best things to do in Valldemossa is undoubtedly wandering and losing yourself in its streets and alleys. Over the years, it has conserved a typical and well-maintained Mallorcan village architecture.

Between the beautiful cobblestones, florised houses and doors, long pedestrian alleys, and local café, you can spend hours captivated by the beauty. Being surrounded by the mountain adds another layer to the wildness of this place. Valldemossa isn’t big, and you will not need more than a whole day to explore it. Therefore, I highly encourage you to lose yourself in the maze of streets.

You can find a stunning point of view, a wooden carved door, or a surprise after each corner. Therefore, look up or straight in front of you but let the damn maps in your pocket. This way, you are almost certain of uncovering the magic and charm of Valldemossa.

2/ Try the local speciality

Your visit to Valldemossa should include a local speciality try, aka the Coca de Patata. It is claimed to be a traditional light brioche made with potato flour. Although I didn’t feel much difference with a regular brioche, I have to admit that it was good. The best combo you can make is to pair it with a cold horchata during a quick break.

It might also be the opportunity to try other Mallorcan specialities such as:

  • The Sobrasada (traditional Mallorcan charcuterie made with pork and spices, usually spread on a slice of bread with honey on top)
  • The ensaïmada (try the ensaïmada Lisa, which is the original)
  • Local goat cheese

Please do me a favour and don’t rush to Ca’n Molinas. It is a great bakery but has seen a lot of traffic influence because every blog advises you to go there. Instead, opt for a smaller business and go to Es Pouet. It is a tiny shop handled by a local woman selling many local products for you to try.

3/ Frederic Chopin and George Sand Museum

Just aside from the Iglesia de la Cartuja entry stands a museum devoted to the stay of these two renowned figures. Visitors can explore the cells they inhabited, now transformed into a museum housing Chopin’s Pleyel piano, personal artefacts, and intimate letters.

Frédéric Chopin and George Sand shared a romantic relationship for about nine years (1837–1847). Plus, Chopin was in an advanced stage of tuberculosis infection. These two factors led them in Valldemossa to cure Chopin’s weak health while avoiding social pressures and gossip.

Opening time: 10 AM – 5 PM (can vary depending on the season. More info here)

Entry price: 6€ only on-site

4/ Iglesia de la Cartuja - Carthusian Monastery

In 1309, King Jaume II of Mallorca, seeking a remedy for his asthmatic son Sancho, commissioned a palace in Valldemossa, drawn by the fresh and pure mountain air. However, 90 years later, the building was given away to the Carthusian monks who made the palace a place of spiritual and religious matters.

Later, The Real Cartuja de Valldemossa became renowned for hosting famous figures. Frédéric Chopin and George Sand found shelter during the winter of 1838–1839. Chopin composed several pieces of art there, while Sand wrote “Un hiver à Majorque,” describing their stay and the local culture.

I haven’t personally visited the inside of the Carthusian Monastery, preferring to stroll around and take my time.

5/ Jardin Rei Joan Carles

Nestled in front of the Town Hall and the Cartuja Church, a wonderful and well-maintained garden blossom. This jardin is dedicated to King Juan Carlos I of Spain and displays aesthetic elegance with historical significance.

Originally established to complement the cultural heritage of Valldemossa, you can find statues and faces of the region’s illustrious past visitors, such as Chopin or George Sand.

It is free to enter and open daily. So, every Valldemossa visit should include a stroll within its green alleys. Wandering in this luxurious environment was nice, and I enjoyed a cup of tea while reading on one of the present benches for a relaxing moment.

6/ Església de Sant Bartomeu

This church located slightly away from the Valldemossa centre, had a crucial importance in the local history. The building dates back to 1245 and offers a breathtaking view of the surroundings from the bell tower. During the 14th century, it underwent expansion and was rededicated to Saint Bartholomew the Apostle.

The inside is nice with religious artworks, stone carvings, and altarpieces. It opens to the public every day from 8 AM to 8 PM, and entry is free. It might be a place you want to add to your Valldemossa Itinerary if you are interested in the local religious history.

Local Things & Hidden Gems in Valldemossa

1/ Check out the mirador II

Coming from Palma on the Ma-1110 road, there is a must-stop stop you should park before starting your one day in Valldemossa. The whole drive is stunning, and this mirador is like the cherry on top.

There is a small mirador called “Mirador de Valldemossa II” where you have memorable views over the picturesque village and the luxurious surroundings. It was the first thing I did when I arrived there, and walking from the centre to this point took me 15-20 minutes.

2/ Visit and taste local products at SONMO

Do you want to consume local, quality, and sustainable products while visiting Valldemossa? Don’t hesitate any longer and head to SONMO on one of the main alleys.
They run an olive farm just a few kilometres away and produce a wide variety of olive-based products ranging from oil to paste and even some surprises.

Their shops felt authentic, and the lady in charge was simply adorable. She made me try different kinds of olive oils and locally made jam before I settled on and bought her a few memories.

All the products are high-quality and locally sourced, and you might want to try them if you are in Valldemossa for one day.

3/ Casa Natal de santa Catalina Thomas

This modest chapel in the middle of the old town holds incredible importance in local history. It is known to be the birthplace of Santa Catalina Thomas, the island’s only native saint.

She is celebrated and renowned for her devout life and mystical experiences. She joined the Augustinian convent of Santa Maria Magdalena in Palma in 1553 and was canonized in 1930.

The place is adorned with tile paintings depicting scenes from her life. Interestingly, I have seen this tradition all over Valldemossa. The tiles bearing the inscription “Santa Catalina Thomàs pregau per nosaltres” (“Saint Catalina Thomàs, pray for us”), are found on many home doors in the village, reflecting the importance of the saint for locals.

4/ Check out the view at Mirador 2

It is one of my favourites as I enjoyed a tasty picnic overhanging the whole village. Definitely one of the best things to do in Valldemossa as you are also more likely to escape the crowds.

You have to start walking on the hiking path, and after one minute, you will find this scenic mirador on your right (
here). Be careful not to fall as it is located along a small cliff, but the view alone is worth it.

Hiking in Valldemossa

Besides visiting the charming village, hiking should figure in your Valldemossa to-do list if you have time. The surroundings are a playground for any nature lover, and many hike trails start from the old town. Alternatively, you can visit Valldemossa by hiking the GR221 entirely or just a part of it.

I did that and every step of this amazing path crossing the Tramuntana mountains was unforgettable!
The most famous parts of the GR221 in Mallorca starting from Valldemossa and other nearby hikes are:

  • Valldemossa – Déia Segment 5 GR221 (10km – 4h30)
  • Valldemossa – Esporles GR221 (10km – 3h30)
  • Valldemossa – Bay of S’Estaca (6 km – 2h30)
  • Camí de s’Arxiduc (13.5 km – 5h)

Where to eat in Valldemossa

Es pouet

This one is for the OG’s travellers on a budget who like simple but tasty meals. It is more of a tiny grocery shop than a restaurant, but you will find everything you want inside. The place is handled by a local lady, and strangely it was one of the best things I’ve done in Valldemossa.

I bought the Coca de Patata inside and all the needed ingredients to craft a memorable sandwich with only local and traditional products.

She has different varieties of cheese and charcuterie you can choose from, along with fruits and vegetables at a very affordable price.

If you have no inspiration, she offers 6-7 kinds of sandwiches made in front of your eyes for 5-8€, big enough to satisfy your hunger.

Price per person: 7-12€

For those with a bit more budget and who want to try a proper restaurant, this is where to eat in Valldemossa. They have a restrained menu favouring locally sourced ingredients and only display Mallorcan/Spanish cuisine.

Their favourite is Pa amb oli, a traditional Mallorcan recipe consisting of a simple slice of bread with olive oil and topped with different kinds of meat, fish, or cheese.
Nothing to go crazy about, but it is typical of the island. Plus, the inside is comfy and relaxing, especially their outside patio where you sit surrounded by plants and flowers.

Where to Stay in Valldemossa

I haven’t stayed in Valldemossa overnight as it was crazy expensive although it was during the shoulder season. Therefore, I cannot write about the first-hand experience of where to stay in Valldemossa.

In my opinion, it is still better to sleep in Déia or Palma and reach the village by car or bus for a day trip except if you feel like money isn’t a problem for you (which isn’t the case for me, stay strong savvy backpackers).

How to get to Valldemossa

Due to its location in the mountains, Valldemossa isn’t really accessible by foot except if you have decided to undertake the GR221 trails.
The most convenient way to reach the village is by public transportation or car.

From Palma de Mallorca - 35min - 25km

You can either take your car and enjoy the scenic ride until Valldemossa or choose to go by public transportation. A few times a day, the buses 203 & 204 leave every hour from the Central Station (Downstair floor) and pass by Valldemossa. As you can imagine, the bus gets full quickly, and you might have to stand during the whole trip.

Bus: 203 & 204
Bus tickets: 5-8€ one-way for a single person.

Same thing from Soller. You can ride your car or take the bus. Just consider that public transportation lasts double the time compared to the car. However, passing by Déia allows you to explore one of the best Villages in Mallorca.

Déia is close to Valldemossa, making it easy to establish your base camp there. It is the same bus as the one leaving Palma de Mallorca but in the opposite direction. The views are stunning, and I advise you to enjoy as much as you can.

The Dark Side of Valldemossa

The underlying problem of Valldemossa fame

Now, it’s time to tackle the underlying problem and stake around Valldemossa. Most people visiting this place probably don’t even consider it, but in my opinion, travellers and tourists should be aware of this growing concern.

Unfortunately, the magic isn’t always pretty behind its veil, and the truth can be ugly. Valldemossa is slowly transforming into a Disneyland nestled in the Tramuntana mountains. Not in the attractions park sense but because of the flow of tourists it attracts yearly.

The impact of mass-tourism in Valldemossa

Like many other destinations concerned with the mass-tourism phenomenon, it suffers from its proximity to Palma and the promotion it gets on social media. Locals are starting to suffer from the cost of life, and real estate is turning crazy with prices skyrocketing.

Locals described with anger the tourist flow coming over and over all day long, especially during summer. According to them, it brings a lot of incivilities. From the impossibility of handling their daily life stress-free, parking near the houses or driving on the road.

I’ve witnessed young people pushing grandmas almost on the ground to ensure getting on the last bus leaving Valldemossa. So, yes this place is beautiful, and Valldemossa is worth visiting, but at what cost?

Locals described with anger the tourist flow coming over and over all day long, especially during summer. According to them, it brings a lot of incivilities. From the impossibility of handling their daily life stress-free, parking near the houses or driving on the road.

Valldemossa Itinerary - FAQs

Can you do Valldemossa, Deia, and Soller in one day?

You can as these places aren’t far away, especially if you have a car, but I will not advise you of this option. By wanting to incorporate too much into a single day, you are more likely to lose yourself. Taking the time to uncover and understand the visited places is what makes the travel experience stunning and unforgettable. Choose wisely!

Yes absolutely! Although it requires a certain fitness level, it is accessible for everyone with a minimum of hiking experience. The hike is part of the GR221 and is 10 kilometres long, lasting between 4 and 6 hours, and you might want to integrate it in your Mallorca Itinerary.

To sleep, yes! Restaurants are also a bit pricey due to the reputation of this picturesque village in Mallorca. You should plan to spend between 20-40€ per person and per day, including transportation and parking (without accommodation).

Valldemossa is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to in Mallorca. However, this beauty needs to be preserved from mass-tourism which scratches its authenticity and local life away. Going off-season and purchasing locally made products and memories are some hints for you to travel slowly into this memorable destination.

The island of Mallorca is full of beautiful places, local traditions, and luxurious nature. Within your stay there, what will be your next destination? Will you go back to the wonderful capital and visit Palma de Mallorca? Are you more into hiking and want to challenge yourself on the unforgettable GR221 hiking trail? Or will you go back to inland Spain and explore the amazing city of Valencia

Bon voyage!
