By night, the streets come alive, typical of most Moroccan cities. It is the perfect occasion to feel the vibrant energy, wander between souvenir shops, and try local food. Let yourself get lost in this Moroccan atmosphere, feeling the essence and soul of Tetouan.

The architecture is a blend of Spanish and Moroccan styles, showing the link between these two countries. With its white lines and walls, massive gates, and decorative elements, it is also one of the top photogenic spots in Tetouan.
Nowadays, Michouar’s Square is a lively place to visit in Tetouan and to witness the Royal Palace. Although the palace isn’t accessible to the public, you can still observe it from the outside and use it as a great point to locate yourself.

Bargaining is almost common sense in Morocco, but not for food. It applies mostly to products where prices aren’t displayed at first. The souk in Tetouan is the perfect opportunity to pick up souvenirs and sample local food, so don’t limit yourself and enjoy!

I couldn’t craft this list of the best things to do in Tetouan without including Dar El Oddi. This traditional Moroccan house was built in 1927 and restored by Jalal El Oddi before being transformed into a museum showcasing Tetouan’s history.
The inside is simply wonderful. It allows you to undertake a double discovery: the inside of a Dar (traditional Moroccan house) and the permanent exhibition entitled Visions of Tetouan, 16th–20th Centuries.
The exhibition retraces the evolution of Tetouan through the ages and offers precious insights and different visions of the city through pictures, paintings, family archives, and postcards. The inside of the building is also stunning and worth the detour alone.

With over 200 paintings and almost 20 sculptures, the exhibition showcases the importance of Tetouan in the development of art and history across Morocco. Artworks are divided into four rooms, each with a special theme and retracing the History of Tetouan.
It is a great way to dive into Moroccan art and artists who have been putting in the work during the last 50-60 years. This place to see in Tetouan also illustrates the cultural cooperation between Morocco and Spain, as a former colonial building serves as a vehicle for cultural exchange.

Named after Rabbi Isaac Bengualid, one of the greatest rabbis in Morocco, the Isaac Ben Walid Synagogue is one of the main attractions in Tetouan. It is a must-see place in Tetouan’s Mellah (Jewish quarter) if you want to understand the city’s Jewish history.
Built in the 19th century, Tetouan had 16 synagogues at that time and a consequent Jewish population. This synagogue was the most important and active centre of Sephardic Judaism in Morocco.
Today, you can visit the restored inside, which is still a place of worship. You can observe ritual objects, manuscripts, Torah books, and archival pictures. Ask before taking pictures and show respect to this spiritual place.
Isaac Ben Walid Synagogue Entrance: FREE, based on donation

If you want a break from the bustling Medina, this historical thing to do in Tetouan offers a meaningful detour from the crowds. Be respectful inside and take into consideration others’ faith if not your case.

Also known as Primo Square, the surrounding buildings and architecture remind us of the Spanish Colonial period. Its look and lively atmosphere make it unique for tourists and locals to gather. It is also a great starting point to explore other attractions in Tetouan.
I advise you to sit at one of the Café around and enjoy your surroundings. My favourite things to do in Moulat el Medhi Square are definitely people catching and talking to locals to learn about potential hidden gems in Tetouan.

11/ Visit the Ethnographic Museum
If you want to learn more about Tetouan’s culture and history, you cannot miss the Ethnographic Museum. Established in 1928, this museum moved to Bab Okla Fortress in 1948 under Sultan Moulay Abderrahman’s rule.
Through the collection, one can expect to see some cultural and ethnographic aspects of Tetouan and the surroundings. A wonderful collection of jewelry, costumes, traditional art, and furniture showcases two main themes: private and public life of Tetouanese people.
The museum also presents an interior garden, whose design reminds traditional Andalusian palaces with a basin and zellij-covered fountain at its centre, under a wooden canopy covered in red tiles.
It was one of my favourite things to see in Tetouan for the learning it brought me, alongside the possibility to explore the inside of the magnificent building hosting the exposition. Furthermore, the rooftop terrace is a must-see place in Tetouan for magnificent views of the Moroccan city and the Rif Mountains.

I went to Feddan Park almost every day in the late afternoon or evening during my stay in Tetouan. Many families hang out in this square after a day of work, and children play around actively. This is where you can experience the authentic atmosphere of Tetouan.
Another reason to add Feddan Park to your things to do in Tetouan is the stunning panoramic views it offers over the white houses. Locals call this square the white pigeon because of it.
It is a peaceful haven away from the bustling Medina, where you can relax and talk to locals. With cosy cafés around, enjoy a boiling mint tea while immersing yourself in the local Moroccan lifestyle, letting the beauty of Tetouan unfold in front of you.

Tetouan has been his home forever, and he has witnessed the city’s evolution over the years. Despite the changes, one constant is his passion for his job. Having spent most of his life selling carpets, Mohammed takes great pride in his work, emphasising his extensive experience and knowledge.
Surrounded by colourful yet authentic pieces, you can enjoy a refreshing mint tea and buy handcrafted souvenirs while listening to many local stories. This hidden gem in Tetouan is an unmissable spot in town for those looking for alternative attractions in Tetouan.

Going to the Boaanan Neighbourhood on the other side of the city for the evening is one of the best things to do in Tetouan. Start asking a taxi driver to take you to Ba Imran café in the Booanan neighbourhood. The ride should cost around 15-25 DRH.
Once you arrive, continue walking until you reach the last café on your right. This quirky and welcoming spot offers a unique view over Tetouan in Morocco. Grab a seat, order a mint tea, and immerse yourself in the local culture by playing or observing intense Parcheesi games. In Morocco, Parcheesi, along with Rami, is almost a national sport.
